I'll also note that the 1920s were the golden age of eugenicist thinking in US science and law. I think that "let's make and murder a humanzee" is consistent with eugenicist ideas.
There's a lot of rumors of hybridization of chimera like animals floating around the internet these days. Plum Island is considered something of an Island of Dr. Moreau in these circles. I'm simply fascinated by the bizarreness of these kinds of stories, real or fictional. I especially like to think of how a human being grows up and finds themselves to be Dr. Frankenstein. Like, oops.
There was an urban legend going around a long time ago that the military created human-pig hybrids at some deep underground base. Parents who adopted their children think they have it bad- imagine having to explain THAT to your kid!
